Street Vending

July 27, 2013

This was our very first attempt at selling our jewelry on the square in downtown Lockhart. This city allows this event every weekend. It was so hot (100+ °) that not many people even attended this weekend and it was a little disheartening, but we still managed some sales and made some contacts. One lady bought a pair of large hoop earrings like these

One poor little girl wanted a necklace so bad and it was just way beyond her years. I felt so bad when her mom told her no and the water works came on. I chased them down as they went to another booth an gave the little girl a stretch bracelet with some shiny plastic beads as consolation. Her mom had her thank me and asked for a business card.

We also had a consultation with one other lady on the spot and created a custom caterpillar brooch over the following weeks.

All in all we were thinking it was turning out to be not that bad of a day. Then it came time to pack up. When the weights were removed from the cover that had been protecting us from the scorching sun a sudden wind grabbed it. This would have still been ok, but this woman in the next booth thought she might help right the cover. Oh my goodness! She ended up grasping it so firmly that it jerked it from my hands. This in turn knocked over our bead supply cases. All I could see were dollar signs rolling all over the asphalt. We spent the next 3 hours picking up gemstones from the road. All the other vendors (including the lady that had caused the fiasco) had long since gone by the time we decided to call it quits. Even though some of the gemstones were really camouflaged in that asphalt, we feel we recovered all that was spilled, though one can never know for sure. All I can say is live and learn. And even though that woman that caused that mess left – God bless her anyway, because her heart was originally in the right place for thinking she could help.
